A Musical Legend Returns to Life in New ‘All Eyez on Me’ Trailer

All Eyez on Me

The breakout success of Straight Outta Compton in the summer of 2015 suggested that the appeal of legendary musicians among modern moviegoers remains strong. The movie, which revolved around iconic music group NWA, earned more than $200 million worldwide, along with widespread critical acclaim. It also earned an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay.

Now comes All Eyez on Me, which promises to tell ‘the untold story’ of the legendary Tupac Shakur, who leaped to stardom in the early 1990s before his career was cut tragically short in 1996 when he was just 25 years old. Watch the full trailer below.

Raised by parents who were members of the activist Black Panther Party, Shakur began recording in 1987 and almost immediately courted controversy with his forthright social criticism. His fourth studio album, All Eyez on Me, was released in February 1996 and sold more than five million copies.

He branched out into movies, winning plaudits for his dramatic abilities. He starred in crime drama Juice, romantic drama Poetic Justice (opposite Janet Jackson), and comic drama Gridlock’d (opposite Tim Roth and Thandie Newton), among others. He gave his final movie performance in action-thriller Gang Related (below).

In view of Shakur’s legendary status, much will be expected of Demetrius Shipp Jr., who will be stepping into very large shoes while making his feature debut. All Eyez on Me will open in theaters on June 16.
