Director Rian Johnson Confirms AT-ATs Return in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

The first trailer for Star Wars: Last Jedi dropped at Star Wars Celebration and the entire world felt it. Right after the big Last Jedi panel, Fandango had a chance to speak with the cast in attendance, as well as director Rian Johnson, who told us a little bit about his favorite moments from the epic trailer.

“I tried to tell a really honest story as to where I think these guys should go,” he said, in terms of how The Last Jedi continues the story that began in The Force Awakens. “And I think there are a lot of surprises in the movie, too,” adding that there are a bunch of fun cameos in the film.

“All my friends wanted to be stormtroopers in the movie until they put the actual stormtrooper costume on and realized how hot and bulky it was”, Johnson joked.

Also, yes, Johnson did confirm that those are AT-ATs in the distance. “Yeah, you liked the glimpse of that?” he said with a smirk. He then elaborated on the new planet we see in that epic shot.

“I love the whole reveal of what that battle on that planet seemed to be like. It’s a new planet, a mineral planet, and that’s like a thin layer of salt over this blood red crystal that gets dug up.”

As far as whether the AT-ATs in this film have been upgraded since we last saw them, Johnson said you’ll have to wait and see. “Maybe you can zoom in real close and get a better look,” he joked, adding, “I will say, though, the moment where we come around the mountain and see Rey in silhouette – and I heard the audience sort of let out this breath – I’ll just say it made me happy.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
