‘Fast and Furious’ Spin-off Movie Will Speed to Theaters

The Fate of the Furious

Earlier this year, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham displayed fabulous chemistry in The Fate of the Furious and moviegoers immediately demanded more. Universal quickly moved to put a spin-off movie into development. As we speculated at the time, “Fast & Furious 9 is currently supposed to come out in 2019, but we expect that could change due to this news.”

That change has now come to pass. We just heard that the ninth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise has been delayed to April 10, 2020. The spin-off movie will arrive on July 26, 2019, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As reported earlier, Chris Morgan is writing the screenplay. He came on board the series for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and has written all the installments since then. What can we expect from the spin-off?

Who will star?

We should note that neither Dwayne Johnson nor Jason Statham are confirmed for the movie, even though it is intended as a starring vehicle for them. Johnson has played Luke Hobbs, a Diplomatic Security Service agent, and Statham has appeared as Deckard Shaw, an assassin who was a villianous character before having a change of heart and joining the core crew.

Will this be the only spin-off?

Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley told THR: “The global brand of Fast & Furious is strong and full of iconic characters, and we look forward to continuing to build on the film that started it all, as well as expanding into different narratives beginning with our first spinoff.”

Have we learned anything else about Fast and Furious 9?

The new report suggests that Fast and Furious 9 may have been delayed to accomodate the schedule of director Justin Lin. He is the top candidate to helm the project.
