Kate Winslet, James Cameron to Reunite for ‘Avatar’ Sequels

Soon after making her feature debut in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, Kate Winslet earned an Academy Award nomination for Sense and Sensibility. She quickly earned another Oscar nomination for her starring performance in Titanic, directed by James Cameron, a box office phenomenon that elevated her to a high level of popularity worldwide.

Since then, she has become recognized as one of the premiere screen actresses working today, picking up five more Academy Award nominations, one of which (The Reader) resulted in her winning the award. For his part, Cameron has been busy as a producer while directing several documentaries, as well as a modest little movie titled Avatar, which became a box office phenomenon of its own.

Recently Cameron started production on the first of four sequels to Avatar and now he wants to stage a reunion with Winslet, according to Deadline. Cameron says he “can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life” in the sequels, though he provided no further details about the character.

The Avatar sequels are already set to bring back Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang. Cameron has also revealed details about new, younger characters and the actors who will play them.

That still leaves plenty of room for new, major characters to play important roles — we are talking about four movies, after all — and we imagine that Winslet will be portraying such a character. Will she be on the heroic side? Or will she join Lang as an antagonistic foe?

Avatar 2 is currently set for theatrical release on December 18, 2020.
