Movie News: Barry ‘Moonlight’ Jenkins to Adapt James Baldwin

If Beale Street Could Talk: Barry Jenkins (above), who won an Academy Award for Moonlight, has made a bold choice for his next project: he will adapt James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk for the big screen. He’s already written the screenplay and will direct. The love story, set in the 1970s, follows a young pregnant woman in Harlem who seeks to prove that her fiancé is innocent of the crime for which he’s been imprisoned. [Variety]

The New Mutants: Director Josh Boone shared a photo to celebrate the beginning of production on X-Men spin-off movie The New Mutants. The clapboard was a gag gift from cinematographer Peter Deming. The Love Guru

The Lion King: John Oliver (above with Mike Myers in The Love Guru), currently hosting HBO’s Last Week Tonight, has joined the cast of Disney’s upcoming new version of The Lion King. Oliver will voice Zazu, an uptight bird who is an advisor to Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and, later, his son Simba (Donald Glover). Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner have also been confirmed to be voicing the characters of Pumbaa and Timon. Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book) will direct. [The Wrap]
