Movie News: ‘Baywatch’ Producer Talks Sequel


Baywatch: Producer Beau Flynn says that a potential sequel to Baywatch would bring back stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron: “We just have this really cool idea to put them in this whole new world. We would take it overseas.” Flynn says the intention is also to bring back writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, as well as “all the girls” in the cast. Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach both confirmed their interest in reprising their roles. Baywatch is now playing in theaters nationwide. [Variety]

The Jetsons

The Jetsons: Conrad Vernon, who codirected the rowdy Sausage Party (above left) to great success last summer, has boarded The Jetsons. The original animated TV series (above right) ran for two seasons in the early 1960s; the latest big-screen project has been in development for years, first as a live-action adaptation and then as an animated movie. Vernon, whose credits include Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, will develop an animated version further with an eye toward directing. [THR]

The Spectacular Now

Salt and Sea: Screen rights to historical adventure Salt and Sea have been acquired by Universal Pictures. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (The Spectacular Now, above) will adapt the novel by Ruta Sepetys, which was inspired by a maritime disaster during the last days of World War II and follows three refugees who desperately try to survive. Baby Driver Video: In a new Baby Driver video, we learn about the titular character, played by Ansel Elgort, and how he got his name. Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez and Jamie Foxx also star; Edgar Wright (The World’s End) wrote and directed. The highly charged thriller opens in theaters on June 28.
