Movie News: Chinese Star Joins ‘Godzilla’ Sequel; Melissa McCarthy to Sing and Star in Christmas Comedy

Memoirs of a Geisha

Godzilla: King of the Monsters: Zhang Ziyi, who first gained international stardom in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and later in Memoirs of a Geisha (above), has joined the cast of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. She is set to play a major role in the burgeoning monster movie franchise and is expected to return in future installments. The sequel to Godzilla stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford and Ken Watanabe (who also appeared in Memoirs of a Geisha); it’s set for release on March 22, 2019. The Boss

Margie Claus: Melissa McCarthy (above in The Boss) will star in the comedy Margie Claus. It’s a holiday family musical that will also feature McCarthy’s debut as a singer. She will produce the project with Ben Falcone, her husband, who will cowrite the screenplay and direct. The movie will follow the titular character, who must search for her husband when he disappears on Christmas Eve while delivering presents. Look for it in theaters on November 15, 2019. [THR]

Keeping Up with the Joneses

Tag: Jon Hamm (above with Gal Gadot in Keeping Up with the Jones) has joined the cast of Tag, a comedy starring Jeremy Renner and Ed Helms. The movie is based on a true story about a group of friends who have been playing the children’s game Tag for 30 years. Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, Annabelle Wallis and Rashida Jones will also star; the movie starts production later this month, aiming for theatrical release on June 29, 2018. [THR]


Landline Trailer: A teenage girl living with her parents and older sister in New York City in 1995 discovers that her father is having an affair.
