‘Mr. Robot’ Creator Sam Esmail May Write an Obi-Wan ‘Star Wars’ Movie

At its best, the Star Wars franchise has been varied in its style and tone. Although uniform in whole, the three movies of the original trilogy, each directed by a different filmmaker, are quite dissimilar in their look and feel. The prequels were more consistent, all written and directed by George Lucas, and now so far the modern era of Star Wars has delivered two very different kinds of films in The Force Awakens and Rogue One. We’ll continue to see new voices with The Last Jedi and the Han Solo spin-off, so we should also be able to look forward to other unique writing and directing talents joining the saga.

According to the claim of Omega Underground (via /Film), one of those talents could be Sam Esmail.

You may know him as the creator of the hit series Mr. Robot. He also wrote and directed the 2014 sci-fi rom-com Comet and cowrote the 2014 horror movie Mockingbird. Apparently, he’s been taking meetings with Lucasfilm about scripting a Star Wars spin-off, so say multiple sources, and their belief is that he’s in mind for the Obi-Wan Kenobi solo adventure set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Although Esmail has proven handy enough at the helm of Mr. Robot episodes and his one feature, there’s no indication that he’d also direct.

Another option of the projects we’ve heard about in the past is the Boba Fett spin-off that Josh Trank had been working on before that partnership fell apart for Lucasfilm. But the truth is we don’t know all of what the Star Wars franchise has up its sleeve beyond The Last Jedi, Han Solo and Episode IX, which closes out the latest main saga trilogy in May 2019. And this is just a rumor but might not mean anything even if true. We heard just recently that even Guillermo del Toro took meetings about potentially working on something for Star Wars but that didn’t wind up working out.

For the time being, Esmail has the new Laura Poitras documentary, Risk, which he executive produced, debuting on Showtime next month. And he’s reportedly working on a TV series remake of Metropolis. Hopefully, we’ll learn something official on whether he’s also heading to the galaxy far far away.
