Pretty much anything is possible with visual effects these days. Giant, transforming robots are old hat at this point. The same goes for believable, talking animals and alien landscapes. When everything is a special effect, it becomes harder and hard for the effects to actually feel, well, special. So it’s particularly noteworthy when we say, wow, Ghost in the Shell looks incredible.
Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and based on the anime of the same name, Ghost in the Shell stars Scarlett Johansson as a cyborg who leads an elite counter-cyberterrorist task force that protects the world from futuristic threats. If that all sounds like buzzword mumbo jumbo, we don’t blame you. Basically, think of Johansson’s character as RoboCop, only instead of cleaning up the streets of Detroit from criminal scum, she’s using all kinds of crazy technology to infiltrate corporations with grand designs for world domination.
