Watch Gary Oldman in Stirring First Trailer for Joe Wright’s ‘Darkest Hour’

Darkest Hour

As Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk prepares to launch into theaters next week, Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour tells a different kind of true, British war story.

Gary Oldman stars as Winston Churchill, who becomes Prime Minister of Great Britain and then is plunged immediately into a maelstrom of events as Nazi Germany threatens to invade the country. It’s a role that demands a ferocious performance by Oldman and he is absolutely spellbinding in the just-released first trailer. He may be barely recognizable, but his electrifying spirit comes through.

Official Synopsis:

A thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation and attempt to change the course of world history.

Fun Fact:

Brian Cox portrayed the British politician in Churchill, which was released earlier this year. That movie takes place during the days leading up to the D-Day invasion in June 1944.
